PAST EVENTS

THE FIRES NEXT TIME

December 7, 2000
Boise State University
Boise, Idaho

The wildfires during 2000 were particularly devastating to the western United States and sent a clear message that fire policies needed to be carefully reviewed. On December 7, 2000, Chairman Cecil Andrus, in partnership with The Idaho Statesman, convened a symposium, entitled The Fires Next Time, to examine the wildfire problems with the goal of determining what policy changes might help control and mitigate the enormous damages to our resources. It brought together fire scientists; stakeholders from industry, environmental groups, tribal governments, and others; and policy-makers, including members of Congress and national directors of federal land agencies.

Publications from that conference include a complete transcript of the one-day proceedings and a report, which summarizes the conference's findings and recommendations. That report has been conveyed to the members of the Bush Administration with the hope that, because it represents a consensus among very diverse interests, it will assist the appropriate officials in their policy considerations.

A copy of transcript and the conference report are available in printed from the Andrus Center or click the links below to download a .pdf version.
