| Cecil D. Andrus, Chairman: Chairman, Andrus Center for Public Policy. Governor Andrus was elected four times to serve as governor, the only governor in Idahos history to be so honored by its citizens. In addition, he served a full term as Secretary of Interior during the Carter Administration and established a national reputation as a common-sense conservationist, one that could find common ground among the often-conflicting demands on our national resources. That reputation resulted in part from his pivotal roles in the passage of the Alaska Lands Act and the National Surface Mining Act of 1977 and from the creation of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area, the Snake River Birds of Prey Area, and the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. In the Andrus Center conferences, he has brought together interested citizens and policymakers in a respectful and informed atmosphere, one that has led to increased understanding and consensus. His awards include seven honorary degrees, the William Penn Mott Park Leadership Award from the National Parks Conservation Association, Conservationist of the Year from the National Wildlife Federation, the Ansel Adams Award from the Wilderness Society, the Audubon Medal, and the Torch of Liberty award from B'Nai Brith. |
